If you plan on using the loft/attic as storage space, you should lay boards above the joists. It is not enough to insulate between the joints if you do not cover the entire area.

Some companies may offer to repair your roof with foam insulation. This is not something we recommend. It is important to ensure that your roof remains dry before installing insulation.
If you are looking to use your loft as an indoor heating room, you can create a space in the roof.
If you’re planning on using your loft as a living room, or it’s being used already, make sure all walls and ceilings that divide a heated and unheated space have insulation.
For your home to remain fresh, dry, healthy and clean, it needs air flow. Good installers will ensure that there is no obstruction or sealing of any inadvertent ventilation. You should not cover vents, grilles, or airbricks when you are doing DIY insulation.
If the loft is not easy to access, a professional can install blown insulation. This specialist will use special equipment that can blow insulation into difficult spaces. They may use mineral wool fibres, treated cellulose foam or polyurethane.
Flat roof insulation may save you the same amount as loft insulation on your heating bills. The amount of flat roofing on a property will determine how much savings you get.
You can probably insulate your loft yourself if it is accessible and does not have damp problems. For those cases when damp is a problem or a more complex insulation system, professional installation should be done.
Cooler air could cause cold draughts to enter your loft hatch due to insulation. This can be prevented by installing an insulated hatch in your loft and putting strips of draught-exclusion material around the hatch edges.

Loft floor rolls – These are the classic option. They are laid along the loft’s floor. They are less difficult to lay than insulated boards. They come in both loose and encapsulated (blankets) rolls. These can be used to create base and top layers. They can be boarded with stilts to make a raised platform for storage.
These items and tips are not included in the article’s list. Before you start insulation of your loft floor, make sure you have read all instructions.
While insulation may be present in most homes, it may not have the right level of effectiveness. This could be due either to storage boards being placed on top of it, or because the insulation has not been maintained for a long period. Sometimes, loft floors can be as small as 25mm in depth for older properties.
There is no need to remove loft floor insulation. To reach the recommended level, simply add one or more layers to it. We will discuss how much to recommend in the next section.
The spacing of your loft floor’s joists will determine the width roll you choose. This is because the insulation rolls between these joists. We recommend that you choose one that is as close as possible to your joist spacing. This will minimize the need to trim excess.
