You will need to cover the joists with boards if you intend to store items in the attic or loft. It is not enough to insulate between the joints if you do not cover the entire area.

You will need to insulate the loft walls and ceilings if you intend to use it as your living space.

You can have blown insulation installed if your loft is difficult to access. A professional will use specialist equipment and blow the right insulation material into every space. They might use treated cellulose, mineral wool fibre or polyurethane foam.
Flat roof insulation is a great way to save money on heating, as well as loft insulation. The cost savings will depend on the size of the flat roof.

Loft floor rolls – These are the classic option. They are laid along the loft’s floor. They are quicker to lay than insulated flooring boards. They are available in loose and encapsulated rolls (blanket) and can be used for both top and bottom layers. You can use stilts or boards to board them. This will create a raised platform that is suitable for storage.
These tips and recommendations aren’t listed in this article’s tool and material list. Before you start insulation of your loft floor, make sure you have read all instructions.
There may be some insulation in your home, but it may not work well. This could be due either to storage boards being placed on top of it, or because the insulation has not been maintained for a long period. Sometimes, loft floors can be as small as 25mm in depth for older properties.
Good news is that you don’t need to remove existing loft floor insulation. You can simply add one or two layers of insulation to the loft floor to achieve the recommended amount. We will discuss how much to recommend in the next section.
Your loft floor’s spacings will dictate the width of your roll. This is because insulation is rolled between these joints. We recommend that you choose one that is as close as possible to your joist spacing. This will minimize the need to trim excess.
